About Is a passport required to travel from Jacksonville to the Bahamas

Is a passport required to travel from Jacksonville to the Bahamas?
My daughter is traveling on a cruise from Jacksonville to Freeport to Nassau and back to Jacksonville. There is no air travel involved. Is a passport required?

Here is what the passport agency says. http://travel.state.gov/travel/cis_pa_tw/cis/cis_989.html#entry_requirements Don't confuse the travel visa with a passport - TOURIST visa is issued by customs in the Bahama's. She will not even board the ship w/o her passport !

Yvone, The short answer is NO, it is NOT required (Google WHTI). I, on the other hand, recommend to ALL my travelers that they carry a valid passport. The reason is quite simple. You CAN sail from Jacksonville, and return here w/no passport, but, if you break a leg, or miss the ship, how do you get home? Get the passport. There are a few agencies in Jacksonville. It's the best bet. If you need help, I'm in Jacksonville. Joe

A passport is acceptable for travel mentioned above, as well as anywhere in the world via any mode of transportation, with limited exceptions (i.e. cuba). Within North America, there are additional documents which may be presented for land and see crossings. You may have obtained a Passport card, which you would apply for in the same manner as a passport, but you'd receive a simple card. If you live in a state which offeres enhanced id cards or enhanced driver licenses (Florida does not at this time) that would be acceptable as well. So best bet would be to just apply for that passport.
